Webkinz 101

A few years ago, there was a Beanie Baby craze that swept the nation. People would display massive collections of these little bears that could be valued at the price of a small car. Collectors scoured websites in hopes of finding that elusive beanie baby to add to a collection. Kids would receive beanie babies as presents only to watch them be placed high on a shelf never to be touched. Some thought the beanie baby crazy would never end.
Along came the Tamagotchis or virtual pets. These things became the latest kids crazy. Parents across the county could be seen with their child’s tamagotchis sitting on the corner of a desk or copy machine at work. Schools quickly banned these virtual pets from coming onto school grounds. Therefore, kids recruited the parents in helping to keep these tiny virtual pets alive.
Fast forward to today and the latest kid craze the webkinz. This is a stuffed animal creature that is a cross between the beanie baby and the tamagotchis. The average cost for a webkinz is $10 to $15. However, with the rising popularity a rise in price is sure to follow. The attractive feature of a webkinz is the code provided at purchase that allows for an identical online pet to be created.
Upon activation of the online code, the user is provided with $2,000 virtual dollars in which to spend on the pet. This includes purchasing pet beds, toys, food and cleaning supplies. Additional money can be earned through obtaining a virtual job, playing online games or taking surveys. The webkinz site insists this is not online gambling as no cash money ever changes hands. As with real pets, these virtual pets get hungry and get sick at times. If left to go hungry or be sick for too long, the pet simply passes away.
There have been arguments over whether or not the webkinz are an educational toy or just the latest kid fad. When parents take an active role in the online pet care with a child, the educational benefits are endless. Here a child will learn about all that goes into caring for a pet in the real world.

Wonderful Webkinz : Toys for Kids

The Webkinz are coming! Like hundreds of other fad toys before them, parents are hearing more about Webkinz these days, not from the news, but from their kids on the playground. Webkinz are yet another, not especially cute, plush animal. They come in all varieties, including ponies, pandas, monkeys, unicorns, and dogs. Manufactured by Ganz, the Webkinz retail for around $14-$15, when you can find them. What makes them different though is their “secret code” ID that is imprinted on their collar tag. The ID gives the owner a free year of access to Webkinz World, a site created just for kids. Webkinz World has games, contests and a virtual version of the their real stuffed animal. It also includes a “social networking” functionality that is safe for kids because they are limited to pre-set phrases to communicate. Much like a Tamagochi, the hit toy a few years back for high tech kids, the online Webkinz pets use artificial intelligence to simulate living creatures. Kids actually report back that the pets are “kind of alive.” If you had or have a tamagochi in the house, you probably wondered whether it was good for the child, when you weren’t scheming how to end its endless beep-beeping. Is a Webkinz like a pet? Should you let your child get in on this phenomenon? Pros• The Webkinz fluffy animal is not a real pet and doesn’t shed, eat food, bite, bark, wet, need a walk, or inconveniently die.• Webkinz world may be more attractive than “shoot ‘em up” computer gamesCons• The child’s imagination and creativity is limited by the software.• Danger of online community taking the place of face-to-face play date interaction.• Commercialization – Webkinz is a commercial toy, as you would expect.• The parent should be aware that the purchase of the toy only includes a one year access to the site. All things considered, dad may find this to be a fairly safe way to teach basic computer involvement to a small child and relatively harmless. At the same time, dads should make sure they feel comfortable with the Webkinz stories and that they are aligned with the family’s values. There’s nothing that says that game play is better or worse when done on a computer versus on the floor with a board game.

Webkinz Mania

In case you have been living under a rock, the latest craze to take over the planet is the Webkinz animal toys. These plush stuffed animals are made by Ganz and are adored by kids of all ages, including adults. People can not seem to get enough of these toys and are purchasing them at astounding rates and retailers can not seem to keep the Webkinz in stock.
Whenever a certain toy explodes around the world and captures interest by the masses, it makes me wonder why this particular item? What makes the Webkinz so special as compared to another stuffed animal? Sure the Webkinz animals are in fact cute as any other toy, but why have they reached such a fanatical state by individuals?
One reason I believe the Webkinz is such a hit is that the toy is an interactive game as well. Everyone loves computers and it seems as if we love the idea of a child being able to grasp the concept of the computer as early as possible, and the Webkinz virtual world makes this possible. It is a great concept of learning, work and play.
The other reason I believe Webkinz are such a hot commodity is because they seem awfully hard to get a hold of these days. Stores can not seem to keep a popular Webkinz in stock. I am not sure if this is done by design to keep the masses going at a fanatical rate, but people love to want what they can not have. The more people can not get a hold of something, the more they search and search for the item and this causes a frenzy and bidding wars. Before you know it, people are paying thousands of dollars for a $20 toy just to get their hands on something that everyone else craves.
Webkinz are definitely on the rise and I can not wait to see how long this craze lasts and just how much people are willing to pay for the animals that go into retirement. I have seen some of the retired pets go for as much as $5,500!
The Webkinz craze has become a very expensive obsession. Many people are purchasing them in hopes their choice becomes a retired pet and can cash in. This is definitely a time to jump on board if you are a collector.

Webkinz Takes World By Storm

Webkinz is the latest online craze for kids. As a father of two young children, I know my way around this fascinating new virtual world, and it is very impressive. In fact, I'm also the proud owner of a virtual Webkinz gorilla named, quite unoriginally, Kong.
The world of Webkinz has been designed for users aged 6-13+ (or, well, almost 40) and includes content for all ages and levels of computer skill within that range. The general idea is you adopt a pet, which has a real world stuffed animal companion, and introduce him or her to the Webkinz online world. You start out with one simple room, a couple of toys, and some Webkinz dollars. Then, and often, you find new and exciting ways to collect, earn, or win more dollars to upgrade your Webkinz space.
You can expand your Webkinz world with new rooms, yards, furniture, clothing, food, and toys. You can arrange the rooms how you like, move furniture, and make real changes to the environment your Webkinz lives in. Kong has a pirate ship room, but I'd rather not admit how much fun it was collecting all the pirate themed pieces. My kids have fantastic Webkinz environments; with ice rooms and fully stalked kitchens, backyards with slides and pools the animals can play on, and a host of funky clothing and accessories. They play safe and they love the games, even the ones that may be subtlety teaching them something.
The Webkinz world was clearly designed to reach the widest possible audience within its suggested age range. Although some of the Webkinz games and jobs (yes, your Webkinz can have a job to earn Webkinz dollars) may be difficult for younger users, there are plenty of opportunities and games for younger audiences to enjoy the site on their own orwith the support of an adult. Younger users can also enjoy all of the non-game methods of making Webkinz dollars, including the Wheel of WOW, Wishing Well and the Care Award. There is even a special 5-6 year old question section in Quizzy's Question Corner, which includes over 1000 age appropriate, curriculum-based questions that make Webkinz dollars faster than any of the games.
Is Webkinz World safe? Yes. The Internet can be an unsafe place, and this is why as a parent I really appreciate efforts like Webkinz. The Webkinz world includes what is in my opinion the safest possible chat system available for kids. Webkinz chat is constructed so users can't type in whatever they want. Nothing inappropriate can be said, and there is no way to exchange any personal information. Only people you know will have your username, which is needed in order to add someone to your Friends list. Finally, you can always decline another's offer to join their Friends list, or delete them at any time.
In my personal experience, Webkinz World is a great place to learn and play. Children can learn lots of fun facts at Quizzy's. The questions at Quizzy's are age-appropriate, and most are educationally based. There are also several arcade games that promote learning, such as: Booger Gets an A that promotes addition skills, Lunch Letters that helps children to learn how to type and spell, Quizzy's Word Challenge that aids in spelling, and Operation Gumball that encourages children to think logically. Also, Webkinz Newz and the W Tales encourage reading and the many contests encourage writing, creativity, and problem-solving. What else? My kids are learning about money in Webkinz World; by earning KinzCash, they learn how to save and spend money. My oldest child recently saved up for a new swimming pool that she added to a backyard space in her virtual world. Now her Webkinz can virtually go for a swim. Webkinz World also helps to teach children about responsibility, caring for a pet, and getting along with others. Best of all, no Webkinz pets can die. Webkinz pets can get sick, but they cannot die. Have fun.
